Lake District Guided Mountain Walking

Open group long weekend based in Ambleside.  9 - 11 August 2013.  See below.

In 2013 we are offering two different guided walking programmes in the Lake District.  Each comprises three days of guided mountain walks and they are described below.  A reasonable level of fitness is required for both weekends.  The long weekend based in Ambleside involves some easy scrambling during a couple of the walks.  No previous experience is necessary but you will need a head for heights.

There are two options for our Lake District guided walking long weekends:
  • Book onto our 'open group' walks on the dates specified (ideal for individuals or couples).  You will be in a small group of no more than 6 people plus your guide (This option is available for the Ambleside based programme only in 2013)
  • Book for yourself and a group of friends or family with our Personal Walking Guide service on mutually convenient dates.

All walks are subject to suitable weather conditions on the day.  If we consider that it is unsafe to undertake any of the mountain walks due to the weather, we will provide an alternative lower level walk.

Long weekend based in Keswick
including an ascent of Scafell Pike

Ascent of Scafell Pike

Day 1 - High Spy, Maiden Moor and Cat Bells

We will take the local bus from Keswick to the village of Rosthwaite in the Borrowdale Valley. From there we will walk up the hillside to High Spy and follow the broad ridge of hills along over Maiden Moor and Cat Bells with fine views over Derwent Water. We end our walk on lower level paths through woodland, on lanes and through fields back to Keswick.

This walk is about 9 miles and the highest point on the walk is 630 metres above sea level.

Day 2 - Scafell Pike

Starting from Seathwaite, our ascent will take us past Styhead Tarn and on over further mountainous terrain before reaching the highest point in England at 978 metres above sea level. On a clear day, the views from the summit of Scafell Pike are absolutely stunning. We return via a different route.

This is a tough walk over sometimes steep and rocky terrain. There is about 950 metres of ascent during the day including some short sections that involve scrambling.

Day 3 - Bleaberry Fell and Derwent Water

A circular walk from Keswick into the hills and moorland to the east of Derwent Water with the highest point being Bleaberry Fell at 590 metres above sea level. The second half of the walk is on lower level paths, passing the famous beauty spot of Ashness Bridge and ending with a stroll along the banks of the lake.

This walk is about 9 miles and involves crossing some rough and sometimes boggy moorland.

Long weekend based in Ambleside

including an ascent of Helvellyn via Striding Edge

'Open group' long weekend Friday 9th - Sunday 11th August 2013

Now fully booked.  Contact us if you would like to be added to a waiting list in case anyone drops out

Ascent of Helvellyn via Striding Edge

Day 1 - Dove Crag, High Pike & Low Pike from Ambleside

From Ambleside we make our way up the beautiful valley of the Scandale Beck with stunning mountains towering on either side of us.  We then ascent the Scandale pass at the end of the valley and bear round to the left to Little Hart Crag and eventually ascend Dove Crag.  Our return to Ambleside will be down over High Pike and Low Pike with stunning views over Windermere if it is a clear day.

About 9 miles with approx 800 metres of ascent..

Day 2  – Helvellyn via Striding Edge and Swirral Edge

Another classic!  From Patterdale we ascent Helvelyn via the famous Striding Edge.  This is a ridge which involves some scrambling and on a clear day the views are amazing.  After celebrating our successful ascent, we will return down Swirral Edge which also involves a little scrambling.

Approx 8 miles with total ascent during the day of about 980 metres.

Day 3 – Langdale Pikes maybe with an ascent of Pavey Ark via Jack’s Rake

The Langdale Pikes are the most photographed and walked of Lakeland’s mountains.  We will decide upon the route we take during the weekend.  One option will be to walk up to Stickle Tarn and scramble up Jack's Rake - a distinct groove ascending across the cliff face of Pavey Ark.  From there it is a short walk to our next peak - Harrison Stickle, followed by the peaks of Pike o’ Stickle and Loft Crag.  On a clear day there are stunning views throughout.

This walk is about 6 1/2 miles with total ascent during the day 760 metres.
