Saturday 24 August
A guided mountain challenge walk of approximately 21 miles and 1,290 metres of ascent, in the Dark Peak part of the Peak District. This walk is one of the classic Peak District challenge walks, which is also an annual fell run. The stunning views and varied terrain all add to the enjoyment.
We meet in the village of Edale and quickly aim up on to the southern part of Kinder Scout via Ringing Roger (560m). Here (weather permitting) we are rewarded by extensive views of much of the walk. We can make good progress around the edge of Kinder Scout and Crookstone Moor followed by a descent to Hope Cross, a waymark post dated 1737, and then a gradual climb up to the summit of Win Hill Pike (464m). Views of Ladybower Reservoir unfold on our ascent and then we descend steeply on good paths to Townhead bridge. Lose Hill (481m) looks a long way off, but progress is helped by good paths and gradual elevation to the summit. Its enjoyable striding out on the Great Ridge of Back Tor, Mam Tor (524m) and Rushup Edge (550m) which is followed then around and over Brown Knoll (560m). The final section of this wonderful walk returns to the edge of Kinder Scout which is followed around to Ringing Roger and Edale with stunning views of our completed route.
The terrain of the Edale Skyline challenge walk includes well-worn paths, boggy areas (particularly after rain), steep ascents and descents. Poor weather will make the walk harder and it is essential that individuals have good footwear and adequate protection from the weather.
Individuals are able to book a place on this 'open group' guided challenge walk to join a small group of others. I plan to take no more than six people in total. A good level of fitness, and previous experience of mountain walking is essential for this walk.
The cost to join this walk is £40 per person. Please book and pay below. You are booking with Rachel Bolton who will guide the walk on the day.
We meet at the Edale main car park next to the village hall and public toilets, post code S33 7ZA. Please be aware that post codes in rural areas cover a wide area so a sat nav might not take you to exactly the right place. Please also be aware that mobile phone signals in the Vale of Edale are very poor. The cost of car parking is £5 for up to 10 hours. We meet at at 7.45am to be ready for and 8.00am prompt start.
If you need accommodation locally, the village of Edale is ideal, or the villages of Castleton or Hope are both just a short drive away.
