Bank Holiday Monday 26 August 2019
A full day walk a part of a small group of usually no more than six people plus your guide to explore the countryside, hills and moorland to the east of Kirkby Stephen. This will include a visit the famous Nine Standards Rigg near to the summit of Hartley Fell (662m above sea level).
Nine Standards Rigg takes its name from the line of huge cairns that stand on the edge of the escarpment. The origin of these 'stone men' is a complete mystery.
Although described here as 'The Yorkshire Dales', this walk is actually just outside of the boundaries of the Yorkshire Dales National Park, but still in beautiful countryside.
The walk is about 10 miles/16km with approx 620 metres of ascent. The route we'll be taking passes over some really wild and rough moorland that is pathless in places. It could be wet and boggy if there has been much rain.
The price is £35 per person. Please book and pay below.
We meet at about 9:15am to be ready to set off at 9:30am. The meeting place is outside the Upper Eden Visitor Centre in front of the Kings Arms Hotel, in the centre of the small town of Kirkby Stephen. Post Code CA17 4QN.
There is a large free car park just a couple of minutes walk from Kirkby Stephen town centre. Turn off the main street at a mini-roundabout into Silver Street. Continue a short distance up the road which then becomes Christian Head, and the car park entrance is on the left, just before the school. The nearest post code for the car park is CA17 4HA. There is a pedestrian short cut to the town centre from the far end of the car park.
If you would like to stay locally the night before or after this walk, the villages of Kirkby Stephen is ideal and has a good choice of B&Bs and hotels.
