Saturday 6 and Sunday 7 August 2022.
Ever seen a summer's dawn in the high fells, enjoying a warm sunrise and surrounded by scenery and silence? This is an introduction to wild camping for a small group in the stunning Kentmere Fells above Troutbeck, close to Ambleside and Lake Windermere. We'll support you with guidance on camp craft before your overnight adventure begins.
Saturday 6 August 2022 - Briefing and Walk to Set up Camp
With easy access to the South by train and car, we'll meet at a cafe in Staveley, near Kendal. Over lunch, we'll discuss the camping plan and offer you tips.
During the afternoon we'll park close by and walk up the Garburn Pass, a former Roman Road, followed by a well trodden footpath high onto the Kentmere Fells at over 600m/2000ft. There'll be far reaching views towards the Coniston Fells, Langdale Pikes, Red Screes and the surrounding Kentmere hills. As evening approaches, we'll set up camp with you beside a small tarn or stream, providing advice on pitching, tent craft, cooking and hygiene. On a clear night we can watch for shooting stars and enjoy the silence of the fells.
Saturday's walk is about 8km/5 miles with approx 550m/1800ft of ascent over a rough bridleway and well trodden path that can be steep in a few places and occasionally boggy. A short cross country section is a grassy descent but not too steep.
Sunday 7 August 2022 - Dawn Breakfast and Mountain Walk
We hope for a clear dawn with a sunrise, birdsong and breath-taking views deep down into Kentmere Valley. After breakfast, we make the most of our high vantage point and enjoy an optional ridge walk over the dramatic peaks of Yoke, Froswick and Ill Bell - our highest, steep-sided summit with dramatic views of Kentmere Reservoir far below. We retrace our steps and return towards Troutbeck Valley, making our way back to base with lovely southern views towards Lake Windermere and Morecombe Bay. Our adventure ends early afternoon, giving you time to travel home after an unforgettable adventure, sleeping in the high mountains!
Sunday's walk is about 10.5km/6.5 miles with approx 450m/1475ft of ascent. The ascent and descent over Froswick and Ill Bell is steep and rocky in places but no scrambling is required. The descent is on a rough path and bridleway that can be steep and occasionally boggy in places.
Please note: This weekend is suitable for people with a good level of fitness, previous mountain/moorland experience or experience walking with us, and confidence on steep ground that could be slippery underfoot. Should weather conditions be unsuitable to be up in the mountains, an alternative guided walk with lower altitude wild camping site will be offered in the local area.
