Blencathra via Halls Fell Ridge

6. Blencathra Guided Walk, Lake District,

Sunday 3 September 2023

A guided walk as part of a small group to the summit of Blencathra (2847ft/868m), Locally known as Saddleback this beautiful mountain is close to the busy Lake district town of Keswick. This walk is quieter than other routes and not as difficult as the famous Sharp Edge scramble.

This guided walk ascends the mountain via the lovely ridge line of Halls Fell Ridge a superb airy approach to Blencathra with stunning views of the Northen lakes. After leaving the tiny hamlet of Threlkeld village, we gradually ascend Halls fell top on to the ridge itself with the upper crest classed as grade 1 scrambling. We carefully make our way up the ridge staying on the crest of the ridge as much as possible and soon the difficulties are over and the summit is in sight! After enjoying the far-reaching views in all directions, our route traverses the broad summit and descends via Knowe crags and Blease fell. We make our way back to Threlkeld via field paths and tracks along the valley.

This walk is about 6.5 miles/ 10km distance and 2563ft/781m ascent

The walk involves terrain that is rough, craggy, exposed and steep in places.  It may be boggy in other places.  The walk is suitable for people with a good level of fitness, previous mountain experience or experience walking with us in the Peak District, and confidence on steep ground that could be slippery underfoot. Should weather conditions be unsuitable to be up in the mountains, an alternative guided walk will be offered in the local area.
