A guided walk as part of a small group to the summit of Helvellyn (3113ft/949m), probably the most popular of all the Lakeland fells, but one of the best! It is the third highest mountain in England.
This guided walk not only takes in the summit, but the highlight of the walk is undoubtably the traverses of Striding edge and Swirral edge, classic grade 1 scrambles!
We start our wonderful mountain journey from the picturesque village of Glenridding on the shores of Lake Ullswater. As we climb higher via Birkhouse moor we are treated to extensive views across Ullswater and further North. We then begin our journey across Striding edge itself. In fine weather the traverse is a joy, and the edge is a perfect place for your first scrambling adventure. Following the crest of the edge requires a good head for heights but it is not difficult or too narrow. If the weather conditions are not favourable for a traverse of the ridges, we will find an alternative route to the summit. After celebrating our success on the summit, we descend via Swirral edge which once established on the edge is easy going to the path junction to Red tarn. If time allows, we will ascend the pointy peak of Castye cam (2920ft/890m) and then descend to Red tarn and Glenridding.
This walk is about 8 miles/ 13km distance and 3126ft/953m of ascent
The walk involves terrain that is rough, craggy, exposed and steep in places. It may be boggy in other places. The walk is suitable for people with a good level of fitness, previous mountain experience or experience walking with us in the Peak District, and confidence on steep ground that could be slippery underfoot. Should weather conditions be unsuitable to be up in the mountains, an alternative guided walk will be offered in the local area.
