Saturday 30 April.
A guided walk with a small group in the Dark Peak area of the Peak District which visits The Pennine Way, a long distance footpath that runs across the back bone of England starting in Edale and finishing at Kirk Yetholm, just over the Scottish border. The trail stretches for 268 glorious miles. The first half of this walk is usually day two of the Pennine Way and gives the walker a good opportunity to experience some of its typical terrain and scenery.
Our walk starts in the small village of Crowden in the Torside Valley which is easy to access from Manchester in the West or Sheffield in the East. The walk follows the Pennine Way all the way up to Black Hill Summit, via Laddow Rocks. When the Pennine Way was first created in 1965 the early walkers would dread this section up to Black Hill as there were many peat bogs to negotiate and it was common to sink in one up to your knees! Thankfully now the way here has been paved with heavy slabs supplied from the old cotton mills of Yorkshire and this makes travelling much easier.
Black Hill (1909ft/582m) is on the border of Derbyshire, West Yorkshire and Cheshire and is a flat, extensive peaty plateau but the views on a good day over West Yorkshire are just stunning. At the summit plateau, we turn south and begin our long descent over Tooleyshaw and Westend Moss back to Crowden. The moorland here is more grassy and its a great opportunity to spot a variety of birds, flora and fauna on our return to Crowden.
The distance of this guided walk is about 9 miles/15kmwith a height gain of 1,500ft/ 457m.
The cost to join this walk is £38 per person. Please book and pay below.
