Exploring the Moors and Tracks of Bleaklow

Sunday 1 May 2022.

A guided walk as part of a small group on Bleaklow in the Dark Peak area of the Peak District.  This walk complements our Black Hill walk on Saturday 30 April, giving the walker a great weekend's introduction to the hills and moorland in the northern part of the Peak District National Park.  The walk starts from Glossop and follows the Doctor's Gate track. Once on Bleaklow Moor, there is a chance to visit the 1948 crash site of a US Superfortress Bomber and the summit of Derbyshire's second highest plateau. We then follow the Pennine Way to Bleaklow Head and choose a less travelled track and path to return to Glossop.

From our car park at Old Glossop, there is a short distance before join the Doctors Gate track, said to be a Roman Road. The track served as a route from the Melandra fort in Glossop and the Navio fort at Brough-on-Noe in the Hope valley. The track allows us to make steady progress up to the Snake Pass summit where we turn North on the Pennine Way.

Included in this walk is a visit to the crash site of the B-29 Superfortress, 'Over Exposed', the tragedy took place on 3 November 1948, when the USAF aircraft struck Bleaklow in mist.  Remnants of the aircraft's engines, undercarriage and wings remain, alongside a memorial to the 13 souls who tragically lost their lives.

We return to the Pennine Way and follow the path to Bleaklow Head,  at over 2,000ft/600m and our summit cairn.  On a clear day, you’ll continue with a beautiful 'walk on the wild side', looking for mountain hares amongst the heather.  The route follows a small path over Torside Castle which is a natural mound and returns to Glossop via Cock Hill.

The distance of this guided walk is about 11 miles/18 km with a height gain of  1876 ft/572m.  (This walk takes a different route to our other walk on Bleaklow which also visits the Super Fortress and Bleaklow Head).

The cost to join this walk is £38 per person.  Please book and pay below.
