Sunday 23 January.
Less than 30 minutes from Derby and starting from Carsington Water, this guided walk rises high offering stunning views over Carsington Water on a Winter's Day
The walk starts on the edge of Carsington Water, between the historic market towns of Wirksworth and Ashbourne. It rises onto high pastures with fabulous views over the 750 acre reservoir below. Your leader will tell you about the pasture’s ancient lead mines, now replaced with giant and impressive wind turbines which you pass close by. Crossing the High Peak Trail, you climb to the trig point at Harborough Rocks (1,243 feet/379 metres) with its jagged Dolomitic Limestone and popular with local rock climbers. Dropping into Brassington Village, the walk winds its way back on a miners path amongst sheep pastures, back to Carsington Village and down to the reservoir shore where you started.
Both Brassington and Carsington villages have good pubs and local accommodation. The reservoir offers a visitor centre with parking, catering facilities, lakeside walks, cycle hire and toilets.
The distance of this guided walk is about 7 miles/11 kilometres with 1138 feet/347 metres of ascent.
