Castleton, Mam Tor and The Great Ridge

Walkers standing on Back Tor on the Great Ridge overlooking Edale

2. Castleton, Mam Tor and The Great Ridge

Sunday 20 August, 2023.

A classic walk with some of the best views in the Peak District!

You will be joining a small group of usually no more than six people plus your friendly, professional guide who will share with you a wealth of knowledge throughout the day.

We leave Castleton via Cave Dale an impressive narrow limestone valley.  After a gradual ascent via Windy Knoll we reach the summit of Mam Tor, a hill fort with stunning views across the Dark Peak, Kinder Scout and the Derwent moors.  We keep our height as we walk along the ridge of Hollins Cross, Back Tor and on to Lose Hill.  Here we look back to view and celebrate the whole of our walk!

A gradual descent brings us back to Castleton to enjoy some well earned refreshment!

The walk is about 9 miles/14km with approx 600 metres / 1969 feet of ascent, some of which is steep.

Meeting Place and Time

We meet in at the seating area in the main public car park in the village of Castleton.  Post code S33 8WN.  It's just off a mini-roundabout, and is next to the Visitor Centre and the public toilets.  This is a pay & display car park.

The meeting time is 9:15am to be ready to set off at 9:30am.

Joining the walk by train?  Provided we’ve got enough spaces in our vehicles, we can pick you up and return you to Edale train station which is nearby - just let us know when you book. We don't charge for this as we are keen to promote use of public transport and help reduce traffic in the Peak District National Park.
