Wirksworth Festival Walk - High Peak Trail, Cromford Canal, Black Rocks

High Peak Trail, Cromford Canal and Black Rocks guided walk

1. Wirksworth Festival Walk - High Peak Trail, Cromford Canal & Black Rocks

Monday 12 September, Thursday 15th September

A guided walk as part of a small group to explore the pretty countryside of the Derbyshire Dales, including an old railway, canal and rocks.  Throughout the day, your guide will share with you a wealth of local knowledge.  The walk is being held as part of the Wirksworth Festival a yearly event celebrating the arts, culture, architecture and landscape in the area.

Our walk leaves the site of the National Stone Centre and follows the High Peak Trail down to the junction with the Cromford Canal.  Both the canal and railway are wonderfully preserved examples of the area's industrial heritage.  We then ascend through woodland and explore hidden paths, memorials and the site of Black Rocks, a huge mass of millstone grit cliffs and boulders.  Climbing out of the woodland to our high point we are rewarded with views towards Carsington Water.  A descent into the town of Wirksworth allows us to explore many quirky lanes and properties before returning to the Stone Centre for refreshments at the wonderful café!

The distance is approx 8 miles/13 kilometres with height gain of 1,420 feet/132 metres.

The cost is £30 per adult. Please book and pay below.
