Lose Hill or Mam Tor

Back Tor and Lose Hill guided walk. Peak District

Half Day Walk. Lose Hill or Mam Tor

Sunday 12 July - Fully booked

Saturday 8 August - Places available

These two half day walks would be suitable for walkers who do not have the whole day available, or have just started to get into walking and want to experience something more than a walk in their local area.  Perfect to build on from your local Lockdown walks!  You will be joining a small group of no more than four people in total, plus your friendly, professional guide.

The walks are also suitable to join us for the whole day with a break for lunch in the middle, so why not book for both!

Morning - Back Tor and Lose Hill

(Meet 9:00am for a 9:30am start)

Starting from the main car park in the popular town of Castleton, we ascend Back Tor, then on to the beautiful and prominent summit of Lose Hill.  From here the stunning view is extensive, particularly over the Derwent Valley, Win Hill and Kinder Scout. We return to Castleton via fields and tracks.

The distance is about 5.5 miles (9km) with approx 1250 ft (380 metres) of ascent.

Meet at 9:00am to be ready to start at 9:15am

Afternoon Walk - Mam Tor

Meet at 1:15pm to be ready to set off at 1:30pm.

Again, starting from Castleton main car park, we and ascend Mam Tor via a lesser known route with dramatic close up views of the Mam Tor geology and the remains of a hill fort.  It’s easy to see why this hill is so popular as the reward at the top is a wonderful view of Kinder Scout and the Great Ridge.  After exploring the summit we descend to Castleton via Hollins Cross.

The distance is about 5 miles (8km) with approximately 1,110 feet (340 metres) of ascent. start 1.30pm

The cost to join these walks is £22 for one walk (morning or afternoon), or £38 for both walks.  Please book and pay below, choosing your preferred option from the drop-down box.  You are booking with Rachel Bolton who will guide the walk on the day.

Meeting place

The meeting place for both walks is at the seating area, next to the toilets, and near to the entrance of the main public car park in the village of Castleton.  Post code S33 8WN.  This is the car park next to the visitor centre and is just off a mini-roundabout. (Please note it is NOT the Peak Cavern car park with is just up the road)  The car park does get busy at weekends, so if you book for the afternoon walk only, please allow plenty of time because arriving mid-day, you might have to wait for a car parking place to become available.

The car park is a Pay & Display and costs £4 for up to four hours or £6 all day.  The ticket machine might only takes coins.
