More About The Walk

The walk starts from the village of Hathersage and includes an ascent onto Shatton Edge, skirting Offerton and Abney Moors before dropping into the village of Bradwell.  We then climb onto the moors above Castleton village and reach our highest point, Mam Tor at 1700ft/517m. A high-level track along the Great Ridge offers impressive views over Edale and Kinder Scout.  We’ll descend from Lose Hill to Hope village before a final steep climb onto the summit of Win Hill, above Ladybower Reservoir.  Our final descent takes us down to Bamford and back through the valley to Hathersage.

This route originated in 2019, when a team of staff and suppliers from the Outside and Alpkit outdoor stores in Hathersage picked a dark night to run 34/km/20 miles along the Hope Valley ridges. Their success became  the route we'll follow - 'The Outside Hope Valley Round'.  (More information and video here). We're grateful to the team at the Outside Shop and Cafe who are supporting our Challenge with complimentary refreshments at the finish - an incentive to finish before 5pm!

Distance and Difficulty

The route is 20 miles/34km in length with 4490ft/1369m of ascent.  It will take approximately 8 - 9 hours for us to complete the route.  Participants must be fit and able to complete a full day out on the hills, and be comfortable walking all day with just small breaks.  Please be aware that the terrain will involve steep ascents and descents in some places and may be boggy if it is wet. A full kit list will be provided.

A Shorter Option?

For those wishing to support the charitable challenge but wanting to cover less distance/ascent, we will be passing through Hope after 14 miles/22km  and 2854/870m ascent.  From here there are regular trains and buses back to Hathersage.  Just let us know and we’ll advise when you book.

Please book the walk below.  Your £40 booking fee will be donated directly to Derbyshire Mind.
