1. Fabulous Families - Find the Bleaklow Bomber!

Friday 29 July, Tuesday 2 August, Monday 22 August 2022.

This unique adventure is a search for the 1948 site of a B-29 Superfortress US Air Force bomber which tragically struck Bleaklow Hill in mist.  Remnants of the aircraft's engines, undercarriage and wings remain.  We'll provide a map and compass and learn some fun-easy navigation skills so you can find the aircraft - there's a reward for when you find it!   We learn about the bomber's  sad story and explore the surrounding moorland including Higher Shelf Stones, a dramatic escarpment with far reaching views from over 2000 feet.  This is a great walk for young families who want a fun and fascinating adventure, whilst enjoying far reaching views from the Peak District's second highest plateau.

  • 3.5 - 4 miles (6 - 6.5km) with 550 feet (164m) of uphill
  • We'll park at the summit of he A57 Snake Pass (between Glossop and Ladybower Reservoir) so not too much climbing!
  • Option to lengthen the walk to 5-6 miles/9-10km along the famous Pennine Way to to the summit of Bleaklow Hill
  • Subject to agreement you may be able to bring your family dog too!
  • Walks are from 9.45am - 2.30pm - sometimes we can be flexible on timings depending on the group/weather
  • We'll send you full walk and meeting details when you book

"Our Guide did a fantastic job with my son - helping him read the map and letting him take the lead. We had an amazing walk up to the site of B-29 plane crash. He knew the history and had a wonderful knowledge of the Peaks . Highly recommended!"
