Sunday 8 May 2022.
A high level guided trek training walk as part of a small group starting from the Kirkstone Pass summit car park near Ambleside. This circuit starts high to climb Red Screes before plunging to the Hartsop Valley and ascending again via Hartsop Dodd and Stoney Cove Pike. (This walk can be shortened by ascending a path at the side of the Kirkstone Pass if required).
Distance: 14.3km/9 miles
Highest Point: 776m/2545ft
Total Ascent: 1021m/3350ft
Approximate Time: 6 to 7 hours (dependent on party's overall pace)
The route leaves the large free car park at the summit of the Kirkstone Pass, opposite the historic (and reputed to be haunted!) Kirkstone Inn, close to Ambleside. Our first ascent to Red Screes is on a good rocky path, where height is gained quickly to the summit cairn. The route then turns north over the delightful, less visited, top of Middle Dodd followed by an initial steep descent and level path to Brothers Water, a wonderful place! After passing through the sheep farming hamlet of Hartsop, it's time to climb over another of the many Lake District 'Dodds' - Hartsop Dodd. It's an easy ascent from here onto our final summit, Stony Cove Pike, followed by a 3.5 km descent to the Kirkstone Inn and our journey's end.
The route described may vary according to participants level of ability, progress and weather conditions. Please be aware that the terrain maybe steep, hilly, rocky and boggy in places. Participants must be fit and able to complete a full day out on the hills and be comfortable walking all day with small breaks.
The cost to join this walk is £38 per person. Please book and pay below.
